Because the Alexander Technique is largely experiential it is best learned in a private lesson format or in a small group, or a combination of the two.
Lessons are typically about 45-50 minutes long.
What happens in a lesson?
In the first lesson, the teacher will ask you what brings you to study the Technique, and will explain a bit about the concepts behind the Technique in order to establish a common vocabulary and a few basic reference points. The teacher may guide you through some extremely simple movements which draw your attention to the way you co-ordinate yourself.
Part of the lesson may involve lying at rest on a massage table while the teacher guides your attention to various parts of the body as he/she gently moves you. Daily activities such as working at a desk, walking, reaching, bending will probably also be incorporated.
If you are a musician, you are free to bring your instrument to work with in the lesson.
There is no need to wear special clothing, just something that is not too constricting.
The Alexander Technique is extremely gentle, though powerful; it is virtually impossible to be injured in a lesson!
